Bergen Fish Market and Food: What Is Actually Worth Trying?

Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read

Seafood displayed on ice at Bergen Fish Market beside the harbour

Treat Bergen Fish Market as a place to look, compare and perhaps eat, not as a compulsory bargain. Its central harbour location makes it easy to combine with Bryggen, but the experience changes by season: the indoor Mathallen operates all year, while the outdoor market is a summer feature.

Indoor and outdoor are not the same visit

The official destination site says the market has connected fishermen, farmers and Bergen residents since the 1200s. Mathallen opened in 2012 and contains permanent fishmongers and restaurants indoors. The outdoor section normally opens from 1 May for summer, with core summer hours listed as 10 am to 6 pm; individual indoor businesses keep their own hours.

That distinction prevents the most common disappointment. In winter, do not arrive expecting rows of outdoor stalls. You can still buy or eat seafood inside, but the scene is a modern food hall rather than the open-air market shown in many photographs.

What to do before ordering

Walk through once before choosing. Compare menus, portion descriptions and displayed prices, and ask what is local or seasonal rather than assuming every item came from the boats outside. A busy waterfront location and table service can cost more than a simple lunch elsewhere; the value is convenience and choice, not a promise of the city’s cheapest seafood.

Fish soup is an approachable choice when you want a warm lunch without turning the market into a large meal. Shellfish and prepared seafood platters require more attention to weight, portion and price. If allergies matter, ask the individual seller about ingredients and cross-contact; do not rely on the market as a whole to answer for every counter.

Market visit or guided food tour?

The Taste of Bergen food tour with Fløibanen lasts 3.5 hours, starts at €200.54 and has 56 reviews. Its listing describes 13 tastings at five places, including seafood, baked goods, chocolate and seasonal dishes, followed by Fløirestauranten; return Fløibanen tickets are included.

That is a different purchase from lunch at the market. The tour makes sense when you want someone else to select the stops and explain how the foods fit Bergen. It is poor value if you mainly want one bowl of soup or already plan to ride Fløibanen as part of a mountain visit.

A sensible one-hour route

Start inside Mathallen, inspect the fish counters and menus, then step outside to Torget if the seasonal stalls are operating. Eat only after comparing a few choices. From there, cross the short harbour edge towards Bryggen and continue the self-guided old-town walk. The market then becomes a useful stop within the city rather than an attraction that must fill half a day.

Rain is another reason to begin indoors. Mathallen has toilets and shelter, but it is not a museum or a free indoor lounge; tables belong to the businesses serving customers. For a genuinely wet afternoon, move on to the city’s museums rather than stretching a market visit beyond its natural length.

Our recommendation

Visit independently first. Compare before buying and judge the market on the food in front of you, not on its historic name. Book the guided food tour with Fløibanen only if the 13 tastings, commentary and included mountain ride are all useful to you.
