Fløibanen or Ulriken: Which Bergen Mountain Ride Is Worth It?

Updated October 25, 2026 · 4 min read

Choose Fløibanen when time is short; choose Ulriken when the mountain itself is the outing. Fløibanen leaves from the edge of the old centre and reaches the 320-metre Fløyen viewpoint in under ten minutes. The return Ulriken cable-car ticket starts at €46.43, has 1,275 reviews and takes you to Bergen’s higher, more exposed viewpoint.

The practical difference

Fløibanen is easy to add before breakfast, after Bryggen or between rain showers. The lower station is walkable from the harbour, and departures are frequent. At the top you can stop at the viewpoint or continue on marked paths. It is the better answer to “I have one spare hour”.

Ulriken requires more of the day. You first travel from the centre to the lower cable-car station, then ride up. The reward is a broader mountain setting and access to trails rather than only a city overlook. Weather is more decisive: cloud can erase the panorama, and wind can affect operation. Check the operator’s status before leaving the centre.

Should you do both?

Do both only if Bergen itself is a major part of your stay and the summits are clear. They offer different perspectives, but in a one-day visit two ascents can crowd out Bryggen and the harbour. A better plan is to choose one, then use the remaining time for a guided Bergen walk or the old town.

Neither ticket promises a view. Bergen’s weather can change quickly, so keep the mountain visit flexible. If the summit is hidden, wait if your schedule allows; buying solely for a panorama in dense cloud is poor value. Trails may also be wet or icy even when the lower city is merely damp.

Our recommendation

Take Fløibanen on a first, short city visit because it begins beside the sights and asks little time. Book the Ulriken return cable car when you want a higher mountain experience and have a clear-weather window. With a full two-day stay, doing both becomes reasonable.
