Mostraumen Fjord Cruise from Bergen: Which Boat Is Worth It?
Updated October 25, 2026 · 5 min read
For most visitors, the original Mostraumen fjord cruise is the sensible choice: it takes 3.5 hours, starts at €70.74 and has 10,451 reviews. The local operator’s cruise follows the same broad idea for €64.33. Choose the live-guided cruise if explanations matter more than the small price difference, and the premium RIB safari only if speed and an open-air ride are the point.
The four choices
| Boat trip | Duration | From | Reviews | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original fjord cruise to Mostraumen | 3.5 hours | €70.74 | 10,451 | The proven all-round option |
| Mostraumen cruise by a local operator | 3.5 hours | €64.33 | 4,517 | Saving a little |
| Mostraumen cruise with a live guide | 3.5 hours | €69.98 | 3,054 | Commentary on the way |
| Mostraumen safari by premium RIB | 2.5 hours | €142.63 | 189 | A faster, exposed ride |
The three conventional cruises are close in duration and price. Their route leads from central Bergen into Osterfjord and through the narrow Mostraumen strait. The original cruise’s listing mentions fresh baked goods on board. Check the exact quay and current inclusions on the booking page; similar routes do not guarantee the same meeting point or commentary.
Classic boat or RIB?
A classic passenger boat gives you room and time to watch the landscape change. It is the better fit in rain, for a mixed-age group, or when you want photographs without holding on throughout the ride. The RIB cuts an hour but costs roughly twice as much. It is not a cheaper shortcut: the open, faster ride is the experience you are paying for.
Weather still matters on either craft. A rainy day is not automatically wasted, because low cloud and waterfalls suit the fjord, but spray and wind make the open boat less forgiving. Never treat reaching the waterfall at exactly the same distance as guaranteed; water levels and operating conditions can change the final approach.
Is a live guide worth it?
The live-guided cruise starts only slightly below the original cruise’s price and slightly above the local operator’s fare. Pay the difference if you want the places explained as you pass them. If you mainly want the view and do not need explanations, the cheaper conventional cruise is enough.
Mostraumen is a half-day outing, not a substitute for the much longer Nærøyfjord and Flåm day trip. You return to Bergen with a large part of the day left. See more options on the Bergen fjord tours page.
Our recommendation
Book the original fjord cruise to Mostraumen for the strongest track record and a comfortable half day. Take the local operator’s cruise to spend less, the live-guided boat for commentary, and the RIB only when the faster ride itself is what you want.
